An Interview with Elizabeth Amisu
Is Self-publishing the right choice? If so what does it involve?
Self-publishing is a route that many writers consider when planning the future of their book. Now with the wide spread use of e-readers the process has become even more fluid, thus giving Writers a more efficient way to introduce Readers to their work.
Elizabeth Amisu is an author who knows a lot about the process as she chose to self-publish her creative Dystopian Fantasy The Sacerdos Mysteries joining the popular Dystopian Fantasy novels like Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay. A unique selling point of The Sacerdos Mysteries is that it is a science-fiction fantasy novel with a Black Female protagonist (rare). Sacerdos Mysteries is set in a world called Terra Magna (meaning ‘Great Earth’) on an island called ‘Sacerdos’ which is the capital of the known Universe. Here is an excerpt from a recent interview.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing?
The disadvantages are predominantly to do with the fact that the writer needs to do a lot of the groundwork. This includes getting an editor, proof reading, design, layout, structure etc. You also need to do a lot of the publicity. However, the best advantage is that you get to keep your independence as a writer. You can also get your work out there to the kind of people who will want to read it. Thus giving the writer lots of creative control over every step of the process of creating their books.
Publishers usually take on the task of marketing a book; how have you found the task of publicizing your own work?
The task of marketing own work has been really both exciting and interesting. I have been lucky to have a good marketing team behind me. Family, friends, my college, students and University have been so important in getting the work out there. People want to read books their friends tell them about, (network marketing) so getting them talking is very important. I am part of Julie Cross’ TeamTeenAuthor who is the writer who wrote the Tempest series.
Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr are easy and effective ways of selling books especially in the twenty-first century market as they are effective in communicating with fans.
Do you have any advice for writers who are thinking about self-publishing?
Absolute Yes!! A good start is to have a Publishing Plan. Have a good research on the various Writers competitions you can enter as this will help you with exposure in the Literary field. For example in 2010 I entered in Southend Literary Festival competition and won. This year 2012 I entered into the MigMag Short Story competition and won! Winning both competition has given me an immense exposure in the Literary world and has enabled me to work along great authors and writers. E X P O S U R E !!
Sacerdos Mysteries is available as an e-book; do you think that “the book” is dead and this is the future of publishing?
No, not at all. I don’t think the book is dead. I love books. I have a give-away competition where copies of the Sacerdos Mysteries can be obtained free. I believe Sacerdos Mysteries is so brilliant I want to put a copy into the hands of every fan of Dystopian Fantasy. The digitisation trend is the future but people will still want the feel and smell of real books.
